(Directions given below are the most direct, but not necessarily the shortest)
A) From OR Tambo International Airport
Take the R24 towards Johannesburg as far as the Gilooly’s interchange. (Under the steel cable suspension bridge.) At Gilooly’s, keep in middle lane and follow N1 north to Pretoria (Eastern Bypass). Watch out for LINKSFIELD turnoff but pass this one and take the next off-ramp R25 Johannesburg, which is Modderfontein Road. Go left into Modderfontein Rd towards Johannesburg (westerly direction). Follow the road down the dip, past Edenvale Hospital on your left, through the traffic lights and continue to follow the road around a long left bend and up the hill (two more traffic lights) to the top of the hill. At the third traffic light, turn right into the NHLS entrance (Elphin Lodge on the left).
B) From Pretoria
Take the N1 South towards Johannesburg. In Midrand, after Allandale Road, keep in the left lane and follow the N3 Durban road (Eastern Bypass). Pass several off-ramps to Alexandra and Edenvale. After London Road watch for R25 Johannesburg (second of two in quick succession), which goes off under the Modderfontein Road bridge and turns sharp left up onto the bridge. Turn LEFT into Modderfontein Rd towards Johannesburg (westerly direction). Follow the road down the dip, past Edenvale Hospital on your left, through the traffic lights and continue to follow the road around a long left bend and up the hill (two more traffic lights) to the top of the hill. At the third traffic light, turn right into the NHLS entrance (Elphin Lodge on the left).
C) From Johannesburg
There are MANY options. If you are heading towards the east and Edenvale. Louis Botha Avenue is a good landmark. If you are heading north along Louis Botha Ave, you will turn RIGHT at the Balfour Park shopping Centre (MacDonalds on the left). If you follow this road to where it forks opposite Balfour Park shopping centre, then keep to the right fork through the traffic lights; the road meanders through the suburbs until you get to traffic lights after Baby World and a café (on the left) and Sandringham High School opposite on the right. Turn LEFT at the traffic lights into Modderfontein Road and the entrance to NHLS and NICD is on the left at the next set of traffic lights.
